The La Verne Historical Society has chosen a 1938 International truck previously owned by Mr. Wesley Inman Conety as its logo and defining emblem. Mr. Conety was the second President of the La Verne Historical Society and recycled over $20,000 in materials to underwrite the Society’s bronze marker program. Mr. Conety drove the truck over 960,000 miles before he sold it to the Society for its original cost of $1350. Inman Conety was named Citizen of the Year in 1975. He passed away at age 93 in 1992.
The International required intense restoration and received all new mechanical to bring it back to running order. It will function as a “mobile museum” of sorts, transporting selected citizens through La Verne’s streets during its Fourth of July parade and “making the scene” at car shows, city-sponsored events, and La Verne’s Easter Egg Hunt. When not in active service at events, it will reside at the homes of various members of the Society and be parked outside Society-sponsored event locations such as home tours. It can do additional duty by returning to La Verne’s Heritage Park location to be displayed for students as part of their local history education. Seeing an exciting local artifact will add excitement to children’s engagement with local history and provide Society members to re-tell Inman Conety’s story.
